In 2004, Gallery Amichi launched the BIG ONES LITTLE ONES® project. In the last six years, this unique visual arts/literacy program has experienced major growth and rapid expansion. It has become an annual international event, with a positive impact on the lives of children across the world.
BIG ONES LITTLE ONES® presents as a series of international art exhibitions, featuring the work of established and emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists (Big Ones) together with the art and stories from children aged five years up (Little Ones).
Participation in this engaging, interesting and fun activity is open to all Little Ones, regardless of race, colour, language, cultural background or religion. Recognising art as a valid means of communication, BIG ONES LITTLE ONES® also gives a voice to young people for whom verbal language may be inaccessible. Whilst providing great role models for the children, Big Ones gain access to new audiences. At the same time, Visitors to exhibitions are given the exceptional opportunity of seeing original and diverse artworks, presented within a unique cultural/multicultural context.
Originally, five schools were involved in this initiative. To date, children from thirty-five schools in marginalized urban, rural and remote communities in more than 25 countries have contributed to BIG ONES LITTLE ONES® exhibitions. Paintings have been showcased in venues such as Boomalli Aboriginal Gallery, The Sydney Children’s Hospital, New South Wales State Parliament House and the Museum for Contemporary Arab Art, Sharjah (in the United Arab Emirates)
BIG ONES LITTLE ONES® is an extraordinary project. There is nothing else like it anywhere else in the world. It is not just about art, education, the importance of diversity, inclusion, or equal opportunity. It is not just about linking kids, classrooms, cultures, communities and countries. Being such an unusual and very effective trans-generational, cross-cultural program, it is all of this and more. It has a successful history, an accelerated growth rate and a proven ‘track-record’. The project also has unlimited potential. More importantly, BIG ONES LITTLE ONES® has positive outcomes for everyone involved.
